We fill our car with high-quality fuel so that it has a long life. Can we say the same about ourselves, people?

What do we eat, what quality ingredients are our foods made of, and how are they prepared? If we asked 100 people, 90 would most likely say that they don't care about what is inside the food they eat: whether it contains pesticide residues, nitrates, food industry additives, or genetically modified ingredients. (Not to mention the toxins produced during preparation and storage.)

In many cases, this issue only becomes important when some kind of serious illness rears its head. Then, in the best case, he alth comes to the top of the order of importance, and the main related risk factor comes under scrutiny: an unhe althy diet.

An American medical society explained in a study in 1982 that the diet can be blamed for the development of the disease in 50-60 percent of cancer patients. So the saying is true: "You become what you eat." It is worth embracing and buying and consuming organic food and raw materials that are clean and free from chemical and genetic manipulation. Today, organic goods can be purchased in many places: specialized stores, organic markets, certain chain stores also stock such foods, and with a "good taste" you can also find primary producers who do not use chemicals in their farming in the traditional market.

We often hear from customers: do you believe that the food you buy in the organic store is really organic? The answer is a long explanation of how cultivation takes place and what guarantees there are for quality: Organic products are produced in compliance with the strict rules of ecological (bio) farming. In Hungary, there is a serious inspection, the organization that inspects and issues the certificate is Biokontroll Hungária Kft. This name must be included on the label of organic products, as well as HU-ÖKO-01 or HU-ÖKO-02.

What makes it organic?

Now let's see what makes organic food organic, i.e. how organic farming works. The first step is to select the land. Here is the main point: the area involved in ecological management must be at a certain distance from busy public roads and industrial areas. Then they improve the nutrient composition of the farmland with green fertilization. After that, the topsoil cannot be treated with any synthetic chemicals for 3-5 years. Organic seeds free from genetic manipulation are sprinkled into the now cleared, nutrient-rich soil. The use of synthetic plant protection agents and fertilizers is still prohibited! For soil improvement, farmers use animal manure and vegetable compost, and for plant protection, non-absorbable, easily washed off with water, mineral or vegetable sprays (for example: nettle juice, copper). Pests are protected by crop rotation, correct plant association and manual labor (for example, they kill the beetles).

In addition to being kept in appropriate conditions, the animals are fed chemical-free food and if they fall ill, they are treated with homeopathic and herbal medicines. Unlike traditional animal husbandry, the use of tranquilizers, antibiotics, hormone preparations and appetite-stimulating industrial aromas is prohibited in organic animal husbandry. Food processing also has strict rules, very few and only natural flavors or aromas are allowed.

A series of international and domestic research proves that organic food is not only cleaner than conventional food, but also more valuable in terms of quality. The organic crop receives its nourishment from he althy soil, so it contains much more minerals and vitamins than its counterpart produced in intensive agriculture. It has a much lower nitrate content and is also tastier.

Although organic foods are more expensive - due to more and more expensive human labor - they are worth choosing because the investment pays off: if we eat organic products, our immune system works efficiently, we get sick less often and we recover faster.
