“I am 29 years old. I feel that I would be in the ideal physical condition to have a child right now. However, my work and lifestyle do not allow this yet, I plan to start a family a few years later. However, this causes a serious dilemma for me, said Hajnalka Lénárt, who recently started working in the advertising industry and is also engaged in documentary filming.

Then you must be a single careerist

The young woman is one of those who, based on statistics, want to give birth in their mid-thirties, beyond the period considered ideal for having children. There are quite a few reasons for this. Among other things, they want to start a family with adequate existential foundations, and they consider it important to reach a level in their careers before having children, so that they can go back to work with as little compromise as possible. Family planning may also be delayed because in their late twenties they have not yet found the man with whom they would have a child.

“Those who want to postpone childbearing for reasons like this are often attacked as being pushy, careerist women. And if it's about the fact that you haven't found the right one at the age of thirty, then they'll tell you that you're single and only cares about yourself. I don't feel like either."

You should worry less about time

Many girls have fears about having children. When we started talking with Hajnalka Lénárt, the first thing I thought was that we would discuss the spiritual side of starting a family, but we didn't. My interviewee has a definite idea of how to solve his problem, which according to him - like many others - does not stem from fear of responsibility.

“If it were possible for single women to freeze their eggs during the period when they are at their peak physically, mentally and in terms of their he alth, they would not have to worry that years later, when their lives would end it reaches the stage where they can actually have children, whether they can still do so. I'm afraid that my work is so stressful and external circumstances will affect me to such an extent that the quality of my eggs will deteriorate over time."

Lénárt Hajnalka knows that the ideal time for having children for women is 23-26 years old. According to other statistics, the ideal age is 27-30, but it is a fact that the time to start a family has been delayed compared to the past decades, and sociological and economic reasons also play a role in this.

Technically difficult to solve

Regarding egg freezing, it is really not a common practice, because it is technically difficult to freeze the cell and then thaw it over time so that the cell or ovarian tissue retains its original genetic and physiological properties. Based on the medical journals, the frozen storage of sperm, i.e. cryopreservation, and the flask program are already solved tasks in our country, but in the case of an egg, it is a single cell that must be ensured to be capable of fertilization even after freezing. Among other things, the high water content makes the ovum vulnerable.

Based on the information on the website of the Róbert Károly Private Clinic, the rate of pregnancies resulting from frozen ovum is now even lower than that from frozen embryos. However, the press was able to report on a domestic success story as early as August 2005, when a he althy boy was born from a pregnancy created after egg freezing.

Only perfect cells are suitable for freezing

The biologist Katalin Kanyó of the Buda Infertility Center, the manager of the tissue culture program, told the press at the time that Hungary is the eighth country in the world and the third in Europe where a child has been born from the fertilization of a frozen egg, and added that the procedure is currently only available in them is used, not least because there is equipment available there that is suitable for testing the DNA content of the living egg, because only eggs in perfect condition are suitable for deep freezing.

In this case, however, there was no question of a single woman wanting to postpone starting a family until later than ideal, but rather a couple over 30 years of age struggling with infertility participating in the center's program managed to have a child thanks to the procedure.

In the continuation of our series of articles, we are looking for answers to the questions, among other things, with Hajnalka Lénárt, in which cases it might be justified for a woman to request the freezing of her eggs. Is it possible to apply for this procedure as a single woman. Dívány's genetic expert reviews Hajnalka's plans, and we also find out what ethical standards and legal regulations apply to this procedure.
