A worm that breeds in the excrement of dogs and cats can even cause blindness, and when it gets into the sandbox, it infects the children playing there.

Our reader, Kata, tries to draw attention to the fact that child and dog carriers fit well next to each other if the necessary safety measures are observed.

A lot of news about animals appears in various media and forums these days. Advertisements about tick exterminators, reports about diseases and deaths that spread from animals to humans. As much as these seem like tabloid news, they are undoubtedly important from one point of view: part of the attention is also focused on the solution, in other words, what can anyone who has not yet been hit by such a terrible calamity, keeps an animal, has children or "simply" pays attention to their fellow human beings, what they can do to prevent it. In the spirit of this, read the following nightmare report.

“My little boy builds sand castles, digs tunnels, shapes fish or anything else with enthusiasm that surpasses even his peers (4 years old), as soon as we pass a sandpit. Many times this is quite tiring, since he doesn't care where we went, whether there is laundry, shopping, cooking lunch, if he sees a sandbox: no, it's already inside and the new masterpiece is being built. In addition to all this - as you can expect from a modern architect who thinks in a team - he is quite communicative, open and inquisitive, so as soon as he sees a contemporary nearby, he starts agitating for joint work.

This is how it happened last time, when we went to the nearby playground, popular with dogs and children alike, during our usual morning walk. It was already visible from afar that there were children down there - hooray, we won't be alone - I also heard a little rumor about the children's clothes of the rummagers in the neighborhood, about the possibilities of the soon-to-be kindergarten election.

Öcsi immediately spotted that a little fellow doesn't litter - what an incomprehensible behavior this is - well, let's organize the little recluse too! One of the little boy's eyes was taped shut, he was quite pale, and I thought he was recovering from the end-of-winter flu. Then - while talking with his mother - their tragedy fell on me.

For half a year, even they strengthened the team of enthusiastic sandcastle builders, until more than once the little boy's vision began to deteriorate: at first he only watched TV strangely one-sidedly, and then one of his eyes became blurry. The medical diagnosis was eye inflammation caused by dog worms, which was established after lengthy blood tests and ophthalmological appointments. The first step in the treatment was eye surgery, they were lucky that they noticed the problem not too late, and thus the worm could be operated on. Now it is "only" months of antibiotic treatment and administration of anti-inflammatory drugs, with a little care they can even get away with a little residual squinting, but what is this compared to the fact that others have already lost their eyes for this reason. The doctor who performed the surgery told me how these cases have increased recently, and that the background found out was almost always a playground sandbox."

The story continues so far, and as a lesson, let me share what I have managed to find out since then:

dogs (and cats too) have several intestinal parasites that can pose a serious threat to us humans. Of course, they can be deposited anywhere during their big work, they prefer to do this in places where they can be dug (such as sandpits). Since the small worms or their eggs are quite resistant, from here a direct path leads to the children's hands, mouths, and eyes, and it only depends on luck whether it will be a small or a big problem. (you can find scarier than scary pictures on the internet in about 1 minute, if you are a more visual type, here is an example.

Of course, it's not the animals' fault that they carry such dangers, we also have cats and dogs, and we wouldn't even think of getting rid of them after that (there would be crying after Döncike). But it is certain that - at the suggestion of our veterinarian - I have since written in my notebook to give them worming medicine every 3 months, and I always take a small bag with me for walks, to collect what can be collected.

So let's make this little horror story not only interesting, but also instructive, and let's prevent such dramas. Thank you also on behalf of my children.
