In Hungary, the child welfare services are aware of a total of approximately 20,000 - mostly under 5 - abused and neglected children, of whom 30 die each year clearly as a result - among the others, this was also discussed at the ÁNTSZ's National Child He alth Institute (OGYEI) on Friday conference.

The main purpose of the meeting was to draw attention to the fact that they can even cause brain hemorrhage and spinal cord injury to babies and small children by shaking them strongly.

According to ÁNTSZ data, more than a quarter of all fractures up to the age of five are the result of intentional aggression. More than 7 percent of deaths under the age of one are due to abuse. Among the most at risk are premature babies, those born with some kind of developmental disorder or injury, and first-borns are more often affected by aggression.

The most common form of abuse affecting children under the age of 3 is shaking. This injury is usually caused by tired, out-of-control parents and caregivers. Most of them have no idea what serious injuries they can cause to the little ones. It is typical that in the most serious cases, brain hemorrhage and spinal cord injury may occur, which cause the death of the child in approximately 20 percent of cases. A significant number of survivors suffer permanent damage.

In order to prevent child abuse, OGYEI has been doing educational work for years, like the Anglo-Saxon countries, it is conducting an educational campaign en titled "Never shake your baby".
