The formula alone is not responsible for the fact that babies fed with it gain weight later on at a higher rate than babies with breast milk: according to recent research, the reason is to be found in bottle feeding.

In fact, while breastfed babies know when their mother's milk is enough, bottle-fed babies do not have this kind of control - they eat until the bottle is empty. This can also lead to later obesity, writes Gyermekévek.

In the course of the American research, 1,250 infants were examined for their ability to self-regulate, i.e. whether they can adjust their energy intake according to their actual needs. In the first months, 27 percent of exclusively breastfed babies completely emptied the offered bottle or glass between the ages of 6 and 12 months (i.e. they always ate as much as was in the bottle or glass), while this ratio was 54 percent among those whose lives in their first months, they were on "mixed feeding", i.e. they were breastfed and fed from a bottle, and finally, 68 percent of the babies who were fed exclusively from a bottle at the beginning ate later until they saw that there was something left in the bottle or glass.

According to the study, it did not matter whether the baby bottle contained formula or expressed breast milk, so the researchers conclude that we have the ability to self-regulate from birth, through which our body indicates when enough is enough, but this ability can be easily extinguished - for example with the baby bottle. This is confirmed by previous observations, according to which, at weaning, breastfed babies consume less breast milk depending on the amount of solid food, while the amount of formula-fed babies does not change, but is added to the amount of solid food consumed.
