There can be many reasons for female hair loss, from inflammation to stress to hormone storms. The hair specialist we contacted recommends minerals and a boar bristle brush, the London hairdresser recommends a hat, and for the more affluent, there are hair transplants or hormone replacement if they don't know what to do with the increasingly serious hair loss.

There are many causes and types of hair loss: from vitamin deficiency to inflammation to hormonal disorders, the problem can be anything, even stress or a serious illness.

The most important vitamins and minerals for hair are vitamin A, vitamin B5-B6, zinc, selenium, calcium, magnesium and iron. If these are missing, don't be surprised if our hair is ruined, but styling and coloring also damage and weaken the hair.

“My hair has worn out quite a bit on the top, approx. 5 years ago in the spring. Then I thought it was because I had a lot of male hormones, and I went to the doctor. In other words, I went to the hairdresser first, who said that my hair was falling out a lot, and that it could be a dental problem or a gynecological inflammation, and that I should definitely go to the doctor. I went to the doctor, they took blood and it turned out that I have an iron deficiency. I took iron for two weeks, morning and night, together with vitamin C, and my hair got better, says T, who was lucky, it soon became clear why his hair was thinning.

Basically, we distinguish between two types of female hair loss: diffuse hair loss, when hair loss occurs evenly over the entire surface of the hairy scalp, and patchy baldness, when hair falls in patches from one area to another.

200 reasons for hair loss

“Hair loss is a very complex thing, there are nearly 200 causes. I have now been in the profession for 45 years, my father was also a hairdresser, and this problem is much more complex than we think, you would think that you buy a shampoo and it is taken care of. One important aspect is what we inherit, the quality of our hair is in our genes. Let's bring our hair color and hair thickness, which has been given over a lifetime. Hair is a good signaling system, it indicates when something is wrong, organic hairdresser Mária Székely told Dívány.

“After there can be 200 reasons for hair loss, it is a lengthy matter to determine what the specific problem is: it is at least as lengthy as the time it took for the hair loss to develop. The first sign is that the hair is thinning, a little more remains on the brush than before. That's when one's daughter buys various advertised miracle cures, shampoos, balms, pills. When this does not bring results, various concentrates and super products of super companies come. I'm not saying that these are useless, because everything that brings good substances into the body is not harmful, but this only postpones the problem. For me, a minor examination takes 2 and a half hours, a large examination 3-4 hours. I examine not only the hair, but what the person has done with himself in the long term, what he eats, what vitamins he takes, how much fruit and vegetables he consumes, how stressful his work is, and how organized his family life is. Water consumption is the mainstay of hair loss, as the kidneys and hair are closely related. If the mouth is dry, the skin is dry, the eyes are dull, then the person is not drinking enough, half a liter of water a day is not enough, adds the specialist. It is also important not to diet or diet unreasonably. Applied dyes and dyes are not harmless either - they can cause scalp problems, even allergies.

We can choose from a large number of hair care cosmetic products and dietary supplements, but we would not mention brands now: anyone who has been scared by the amount of hair left on the brush in autumn knows them all inside out. But let's take a closer look at the reasons!

Spot baldness is the worst case

Spot baldness is the more complicated, difficult to cure, but rarer case:

„Spotted baldness, alopecia areata, is always caused by an inflamed focus. In such cases, you need a complete blood count, a dental, gynecological, thyroid, ear, nose and throat examination, it is also worth going to a gastroenterologist, there may be an absorption problem in the background, says the organic hairdresser.

At the same time, doctors often do not find any abnormality except in the areas of hair loss - perhaps this is when the problem is most difficult to treat. It is also worth exploring latent spiritual causes, family conflicts and sudden bereavements are also possible.

Diffuse shedding is at least easier to manage

Diffuse hair loss can be an inherited tendency, but even in the case of a tendency, trouble starts when the body's balance is upset. Hormonal problems are the cause of hair loss in many women. How does this turn out? Women's bodies also produce male hormones, but much less than men's. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is formed from testosterone, is responsible for baldness. Women's hormonal balance can be upset at any time: pregnancy, birth control pills, climax, just to mention the most common life situations. As we age, our hair begins to thin because our progesterone and estrogen levels decrease. Drinking herbal tea and rinsing your hair, or adding non-genetically modified soy lecithin to your diet often helps.

Are you pregnant? You're going bald

During pregnancy, the body's progesterone and estrogen levels rise, so the hair is thicker and grows better, but after giving birth, the hormone level decreases, and the proliferating but actually premature hairs fall out at the same time. In addition, the mother's nutrient reserves are depleted.

“The good news is that if your hair falls out after giving birth, there is a good chance that it will grow back. During pregnancy, the fetus also feeds on the reserves of the mother, whose stores are thus emptied, so after giving birth, the most important thing for the expectant mother is to refill her stores, eat a lot of fruits, vegetables, juicy smoothies, and get as many vitamin and mineral components into her body as possible.. In such cases, I usually recommend a powdery, water-soluble material component, strictly natural-based, which contains nothing else, only replenishes minerals, says Mária Székely, who has also encountered a case where her client's straight hair curled after giving birth and changed so much.. If you are prone to it, you may also experience hair loss while taking birth control pills, because your body reacts more sensitively to hormonal changes.

Are you getting old? Not good news

“Over the age of forty, many women enter menopause and their estrogen levels begin to decline. First slowly, then faster and faster. You may have had a beautiful, rich crown of hair all your life, but overnight it seems to have been blown away… In contrast to estrogen, male hormones do not decrease, which causes some people's hair to begin to thin. Estrogen is responsible for the growth phase of the hair, when its level drops, the hair does not grow as long and as fast as before, it dies and falls out earlier. Hair becomes drier and thinner without estrogen, and just like our skin, it loses its youthfulness, Carole Michaelides, a hair therapist at the Philip Kingsley Hair Clinic in London, tells the Daily Mail.

Is it autumn? Your hair will fall out

If not everyone, many have already experienced fall and/or hair loss and thinning. In this case, all that happens is that the hair that received more light and vitamins in the summer grew faster, but also reached the end of its life faster. If the body does not receive enough nutrients, it does not supply the hair follicles with enough nutrients either, hair growth slows down, hair strands become thinner, growth stops, and hair falls out. There is no need to despair if you experience something like this:

“If we observe the animals, they also shed their fur in the spring and autumn, and new, shiny fur grows instead. This happens to people too, with the change of seasons and renewal, we also grow new hairs - to a certain extent - but for this the old ones have to be shed. This type of hair loss does not need to be treated, a scalp massage, proper nutrition, and sufficient fluid intake are enough. Spring is here, let's relax, sunbathe, walk, eat lots of fruits, seeds, and fresh leaves. Pay close attention to how you wash your hair, never use concentrated shampoo and do not put the shampoo directly on the hair, but dilute it in a ratio of five to six with one to two deciliters of water in a separate container. I usually recommend clean water, because there is a lot of chlorine in tap water and it turns the hair gray, says the organic hairdresser.

Hair replacement and hormone replacement

If there is already a case of serious, advanced baldness, then hair transplantation, which is so popular with celebrities, can be done, although it does not hurt to know that those strands will fall out over time, no matter where they are transplanted. If the crown of hair can still be saved, beauticians recommend mesotherapy, during which vitamins are injected into the scalp with needles. At a cooler clinic, a treatment can be obtained for between HUF 14,000 and HUF 16,000, and eight sessions are recommended for lasting results, so it is not cheap.

Around the age of 50, half of women already notice the thinning of their hair, but still do nothing about it. One solution in their case would be hormone replacement therapy, during which estrogen and progesterone are injected into the body - this treatment also eliminates the other symptoms of menopause.

“In my experience, hormone replacement often only exacerbates the problem, because the progesterone used during therapy is often formed from testosterone, which increases hair loss,” says Carole Michaelides.

Softer solutions

If we believe in ointments and dietary supplements, we can leave serious tens of thousands in pharmacies and drugstores. But if our problem is really caused by a lack of nutrients, these preparations will help within a few months - if they really have everything we need. The organic hairdresser recommends much gentler methods: after revealing the problem, he can give an accurate diagnosis and recommend the appropriate treatment, for example a dietary supplement in the form of a powder, more fluid intake (as already written above), or simply increasing the blood supply to the scalp.

“One of the most important things for people with long hair – but also for people with short hair – is the so-called boar bristle brush: this is a real boar bristle brush, preferably not mixed with plastic fibers. This should be used to thoroughly brush our scalp every day. You need a brush made of natural materials, which can be used to massage the upper epidermis and help the circulation system. In this way, the blood circulation of the scalp doubles, and more minerals reach the scalp. If our blood circulation is not good, for example, our blood pressure is low, then the whole area stagnates, in which case a regular scalp massage can help a lot.

The plastic brush can cause small epithelial injuries on the surface of the scalp, thereby making the area accessible to bacteria, and the scalp can develop fungus and dandruff, says Mária Székely.

If your hair is really falling out unstoppably, it's worth not only using the free hair tests at the pharmacy, but looking for a specialist - dermatologist, hair specialist. It's also worth thinking about how much we've used our bodies: some stress relief, rest, often a long, relaxing weekend, a few days just for us, surprisingly matters a lot to the hair and, of course, to its owner!

Take a hat

If our hair doesn't want to look any better, our hairdresser can help hide the problem.

“Cut your hair shorter, cut your hair into a shape that makes your hair look fuller. Layered hairstyles give the hair more freedom of movement and hug the sagging face more softly. Use professional hair strengthening products and conditioners if your hair is dry. Raise and enrich your hairstyle with hair stylers. Otherwise, feel free to wear a hat and keep it for the bad weather, British hairdresser Jean Noêl de Casanove tells the Daily Mail.
