We tested how vegetarian pâtés differ from traditional products of animal origin. We're not saying we've found the meatless sandwich cream of our dreams, but there were some that we wouldn't immediately throw in the trash. As usual, we included a real luxury product in this blind tasting, a rather expensive foie gras pâté.

Vireco vegetable pâté, Hungarian-spicy

Presumably a Hungarian product, although we could not find out who makes it from the box. However, it is absolutely certain that they are packed at home. Interestingly, they found it very important to indicate on the wrapping paper covering the pate that it also contains drinking water. But if water, what else could it be? It also contains sunflower oil, baker's yeast, soy flour, cornmeal, tomatoes, spices, zinc yeast, mustard and wheat germ. It tastes spicy, maybe too much (obviously, those who like spicy will like it) and has a bitter aftertaste. Its texture is quite creamy, it is easy to apply. In the end, we came to the conclusion that the fact that the paste is strong is not such a big problem, because at least that way you don't feel any more aftertaste.

Verival Organic basil pate

We were satisfied with the packaging of this pâté: it is attractive, all information is clearly visible on it and the plastic lid can be closed easily. There is also a metal cover underneath, which must be removed when unpacking. All the ingredients in it come from controlled organic cultivation, and the ingredients are somewhat more sympathetic than the previous ones. According to the label, it contains water, coconut oil, yeast, basil, potato starch, sunflower oil, sea s alt, pea protein, carob flour, spices, vegetables. Opinions were divided regarding the taste of the Austrian pate, but the smell is very horrible, and everyone agreed. The only problem with this is that even if the taste is good, the smell still precedes it, so who wants to eat it?! Its color is not encouraging either: it has a rather pale, cheap Parisian color. One taster described it as “canteen-flavored retro shit,” while others said it had a slight basil flavor but no other virtues. There were also those whom he reminded of sour bean puree. You have to leave it, the plain version carries everything, but unfortunately it was not available in the hypermarkets we visited.

Mandy, paté vegetal

It is in a plain can, so it is mandatory to eat it after opening, otherwise it will look like the photo in the gallery after a day. In addition, we suffered for at least two minutes when opening it - we had a good fight for it. Fortunately, only one of us didn't like it, but he downgraded it quite a bit: Well, I should have spit it out; a linchpin-like, inedible monstrosity, liquid fat. Cruel poison!” The others didn't agree, they found it delicious and would easily put it in their sandwich - mixed with some cheese and vegetables. The texture is very good, creamy, and finally a product that also smells nice! Unfortunately, we didn't manage to get an accurate picture of its ingredients, but it might be better that way…

Vega Valasi pate

Well, this is the bottom line - what it looks like! It's so repulsive that many people haven't even tasted it. It is not an encouraging sight due to its color and texture either: pale yellow, vomiting-like disgust. The phrase was also said that who cares about the taste, after the way it looks. But fortunately, there were those who forced themselves to eat the strange creamy bread with their eyes closed. True, that only made their opinion worse. On the other hand, its smell is reminiscent of cucumber, although it does not contain any traces of it - on the contrary, it contains beans, buckwheat, vegetable oil, water, sea s alt and many spices. We don't know exactly what this mold can be used for, but don't put it on a sandwich!

Unicarm pate vegetal, vegetable pate with peppers

It is also non-resealable and contains the same ingredients as the previous ones, only a little gelling carrageenan has been added. It doesn't smell much (thankfully), but the taste is surprisingly good. Its gelatinous texture is a bit repulsive, but completely edible, it reminds me of whipped cream with a liver cream taste. It's really foamy and easy to spread.

Globus vegetarian pate

This is not in a can, but in an aluminum bowl. Unfortunately, this also has to be eaten the same day, otherwise the top will easily brown and dry out the next day - and it's no longer appetizing. The texture is fine, there aren't too many problems with the smell, since there isn't any. This product, on the other hand, already contains artificial flavor enhancers and dyes, but luckily the terms organic or natural are not even mentioned on its packaging. It is interesting that most of the tasters felt the characteristic taste of monosodium glutamate and also complained about its terrible orange color. The taste is better than the appearance, but that doesn't mean we wouldn't classify it in the cool-but-delicious category.

Bonus: King foie gras pate

Its color is amazingly dark and it smells very delicious. The tasters all loved it: "It has an aftertaste of a Christmas spice mixture, which is not unpleasant, but its color and texture are exemplary." – but they complained that it was too sweet. According to one of the testers, "It's divine, very delicious, like what they used to cook for babies."
