How to choose the perfect avocado, how to peel it, how to use it. Bonus: guacamole recipe

Avocados are available almost anywhere, yet few people know what delicious dishes can be prepared from them in seconds. Most people know the Mexican version of guacamole, but it is also used as a base for many other culinary delicacies. In Spain and Mexico, it is popularly given to children a few months old, because it can be made into "papi" in a few minutes, it is full of unsaturated fatty acids and has a high iron content.

In addition to these, the taste is extremely good, it can be eaten both s alty and sweet. We present two types of recipes: original guacamole, Spanish avocado cream. As a bonus, we also made a couple of recipes that can be prepared for children.

In our previous article, we showed how to peel and eat pomegranates, now it's the avocado's turn. The green fruit has a neutral taste, is rich in beneficial fats, and has a creamy texture when ripe. Since it does not have a strong taste on its own, it is a good ingredient for various creams, but can also be added to salads.

It is worth paying attention to the fact that the peeled avocado turns brown very quickly, the avocado cream also quickly loses its fresh green color, this process can be slowed down by pressing transparent foil as tightly as possible on top of the finished cream - on the cream itself - so that the contact with air as little as possible.

Which one is good?

Rock-hard avocados often found in stores are still unripe. You can also buy these, but be aware that it will take a few days for the fruit to be ready for consumption. If you are looking for avocados for the day, look for the softer, but not yet completely flat pieces. Avocados bought hard are usually not very delicate, they soften more slowly in the bottom of the refrigerator, faster on the counter in a paper bag (in 2-3 days), while according to many, the best method for turbo ripening is to put a banana in the bag next to it.

Always raw

Avocados should be eaten raw, they are very bitter when cooked. The unripe (very hard) fruit is considered poisonous, but don't worry, you won't die even if you eat it half-hard, just don't overdo it.

Very easy to peel

The avocado is very easy to peel/split, it is worth starting this when the fruit already feels soft when pressed lightly, it is still not very tasty when hard. It's also not good to overripe, then it will turn brown, which is not too bad anymore.

Cut the fruit around according to the white line, so it can be easily cut in half
Cut the fruit around according to the white line, so it can be easily cut in half

Just cut the fruit around the big round seed in the middle, we have marked how to cut with a white line in the photo. The flesh of a ripe avocado is soft, the fruit can be easily separated after cutting, this condition can be seen in the opening photo of the article. If that's enough, take out the seed and scoop out the flesh of the fruit (if you're making a cream), or peel off the skin and slice and dice it if you're adding it to a salad or eating it on its own.

Sold all year round

It can now be purchased in supermarkets, markets, greengrocers and smaller shops. The price varies, it can be found in Tesco in mesh packaging for around HUF 300, but it is usually sold individually between HUF 199-799. So far, I have come across two types of avocados in Hungary, the rough-skinned and the smooth-skinned. I prefer rücskös because its meat is not stringy, it softens faster and is easier to peel. Unfortunately, this breed has to be hunted these days.

The original guacamole recipe, ingredients:

  • two ripe avocados,
  • 1-2 cloves of garlic,
  • 1/2 red onion,
  • 5 cherry tomatoes,
  • juice of half a lime,
  • fresh coriander,
  • a pinch of s alt

Mash the avocado with a fork and add the lime juice. Then stir in the chopped tomatoes, red onion, cilantro and s alt. Serve with toast or fresh vegetables.

Avocado with sour cream

Also a very simple recipe, you need 1.5 dl sour cream, avocado, bread/baguette, 2-3 cloves of garlic, olive oil, s alt and pepper, pomegranate seeds. Place the ingredients except the pomegranate in a bowl and mix with a stick blender. At the end, mix in the seeds and sprinkle some of them on the plate when serving so that you can also put them on top of the bread.

Can be given to children from the age of a few months

Like apples and bananas, avocados can be added quickly, and can also be blended with bananas, pumpkins, and pears. If the child is already receiving dairy products, smash half an avocado in natural yogurt, the yogurt will be creamier and taste very delicious.

Not only meat, seeds and wood are valuable

Its foliage is huge, it produces a lot of fruit, and you don't need to deal with it much. In southern countries, avocado trees are not only an ornament in gardens, but also on the street. Oil is made from its seeds, which is also good for cooking, but it is also popularly used in the cosmetics industry for dry and aging skin. The color of avocado wood is reddish brown, and furniture is also made from it. Some people eat the flesh of the fruit sugared or added to sweet fruit juice, but they also make ice cream, oil, ink, and textile dye from it. According to fanatics, it helps treat eczema and has a beneficial effect on joint pain and lowers cholesterol.
