Recirquel, a group of young Hungarian artists, will perform at the Palace of Arts with the performance Circus in the Night. It is a show that is wholeheartedly recommended for New Circus fans, but - unlike us - you should not take small children with you, because they can watch it all the way through, but they won't like it very much.

The Circus in the Night is a very lovable production, and not just because they are young (the oldest performer is in his early twenties) and because they are Hungarian: abstracted from all that, I would give them a seven and a half on a scale of ten. The show has some minor childhood ailments, but if this troupe can stay together, they will grow out of it, and you won't be able to get tickets for their next shows.

Director Bence Vági has not worked together for the first time with the graduates of the Imre Baross Artist Training Vocational School, their first joint experiment was seen by the audience at Sziget last year. The current performance, put together for the Spring Festival, was specifically tailored to the capabilities of the MÜPA Festival Theater.

What was good:

Az artisták. I've seen quite a few new circus performances, and I can confidently say that the Recirquel performers know everything there is/should be known in this world. They are beautiful, flexible, strong, sometimes funny, sometimes lyrical - and authentic in both roles. The beginning of the show was particularly good - I won't spoil it, if you go, see it for yourself. In the whole show, only one song - the crow - turned out to be a bit boring, the rest were great.

The atmosphere. I liked that the performance was able to break away from the traditional, somewhat forcedly cheerful circus atmosphere, and did not strive for the monumentality of Cirque du Soleil either. And on the dance theater-circus scale, they were closer to the latter to a he althy degree - this is always a plus point for me. The Circus at Night was a kind of noir circus, the scenery, music and costumes matched it.

The costumes. Because you can't leave without saying a word about the costumes either, the typical black and white costumes matching the noir atmosphere were designed by Emese Kasza, whom I can only congratulate for this, brilliantly they did well.

A dizöz. Anna Balogh, black dress, fiery red hair, very good voice. He sang from time to time between the songs, which added to the mood.

What could be improved

A little less idle time. Probably the workload of the young artists also played a role in the fact that some of the tricks were a little shorter than expected, and the idle time between them was longer.

A zene. I am so sorry that I have to say this, because Péter Sárik was amazingly nice - and dressed me in a super costume - at the piano. But the music written for the piece was a success, sometimes it fit, but sometimes it became boring. It's cool that they write the music directly for the show, but I could easily have imagined something different from time to time, something a little more entertaining in itself.

Relationship between the set and the play. The set evoking the city at night was also cool, but it actually had quite a little actual role in the play. The artists sometimes climbed up the firewalls a bit, but then they climbed down nicely, even though I expected so much that there would be at least one track where they were really used.

According to the announced program, Circus of the Night will be played three more times at the Müpa, the tickets for the next performance are already sold out, but there are still some for the May 24th and June 11th performances. If you like to see very flexible young artists dressed in beautiful costumes, don't miss it!
