Today, environmentally friendly activities are becoming more and more important, and one of the best ways to do this is composting. The term itself is used many times, despite this, there are people who are not aware of what exactly it is or why it is worth sorting through the waste.

What is composting?

“Composting is a natural humus formation process, the essence of which is that various dead plant remains and animal by-products are transformed into useful nutrients, called humus, during a biological process. Humans can support and facilitate this process. - says Miklós Gellért, president of the SZIKE Environmental and He alth Protection Association.

The essence of composting is that you shred certain types of household waste and then collect them in an open container. These slowly break down here, and the end result is a substance extremely rich in nutrients, which can be used as fertilizer to improve the productivity of the land.

Why is this still worth it? Nowadays, one of the main characteristics of man is that he produces a lot of garbage, and since most people cannot distinguish between real and natural waste, they put it under a hat and throw it away. However, 30-50 percent of the organic waste generated in households could be recycled, and it would be worthwhile to treat them separately for several reasons. you pay based on the amount of waste delivered!); in addition, you can mix the humus produced from these into the flower and crop soil, thus providing more nutrients for your plants, more beautiful, more, better crops and flowers for you.

What can be composted?

“Compost can mainly contain remains of plant origin. In the kitchen, e.g. a lot of things are produced that we don't eat, and most people throw them in the trash, even though nature would take them back to the maximum. These include apple cores, eggshells, coffee grounds, tea, beet peels, flowers, leaves, clippings, plant remains. Of course, excrement (both animal and human) can also be composted, they also go through these processes, although it is true that the biggest problem in cities is with the materials produced in the kitchen, says the specialist.

Create the necessary conditions

For composting, you first need a composting box that provides optimal conditions for the process. You can buy this ready-made, but it is much more economical to put it together yourself at home. Many people set it up in their garden, but you can even place it on a balcony. However, it is important that indoors - e.g. in the basement - don't try it, because it will only rot, as the material will get too wet, and in addition, an unpleasant smell will spread around it.

There are three conditions for composting: there must be air in the box, sufficient – but not too much – moisture, and heat. When you create these things, the process begins. (of course, these are mostly given if you use an open or well-ventilated crate) You have nothing to do, because the entire activity is carried out by the organisms living on the soil (bacteria, fungi, earthworms), which find nutrients in these organic wastes, and then ultimately produce them the hummus.

This is how you can speed up composting

“It's hard to say how long composting will take, many things affect it, since it's a natural process. The three important conditions (air, heat, moisture) are always available to varying degrees, which is why it can take years in nature. However, this can be accelerated by chopping and frequent mixing, so humus can take place and be produced in 6-8 months. In addition, it is also important to put as much material as possible into the composter: it should include dry, wet, woody material, clippings, leaves, and organic kitchen waste, because the more things you sort, the he althier and faster the process will be, recommends Gellért Miklós.

However, make sure that only natural and raw things are included in the compost. So don't put cooked food, bones, paper, or leftovers in it, because of unwanted visitors!

Tips for better composting

  • shred everything you put in the chest
  • stir the compost sometimes
  • to avoid overmoistening, it is sometimes worth adding wood shavings
  • always mix green cuttings and leaves with tree branches and twigs if possible
