The 84th Holiday Book Week started on Thursday and will last until Sunday. The offerings of children's book publishers also include (very successful) attempts to resurrect the contemporary youth novel and the latest adventures of the eternal classics.

The organizers of the Book Week are preparing traditional programs (such as the Kaláka or Vilmos Gryllus concert), and fortunately there are already some innovative experiments on the horizon, on Sunday, for example, we can listen to slam versions of Éva Janikovszky's texts.

There will be no shortage of programs and books this year either, but the experience of many years tells us to prepare with a trained nervous system and to put a tracker on the children, because the event has long outgrown the Vörösmarty square, and it is easy to find a crowd among the many tempting publications to lose sight of them.

Zsuzsanna Simon Réka – Adrienn Gyöngyösi: As many kings, as many tales

Most of the kings known from fairy tales are wise and old rulers who rule their kingdoms with a firm hand. Simon Réka Zsuzsanna's kings are quite different, each of them has some kind of strangeness.

The enemy-less king takes every possible reason in order to finally have a little war (including the loaned stamp collection) he finds no enemies, the hide-and-seek king orders his people to hide-and-seek, and the scurrying king only giggles and laughs at every problem that comes his way.

The stories are nice, although they are not equally entertaining, some of them are better and a little less well done. All in all: after the "traditional" kings, getting to know them will be fun for the little ones. The volume is decorated with the pictures of Adrienn Gyöngyösi.

András Dániel: Little Uncle and Little Aunt (and My Uncle)

Kicsibácsi and Kicsinéni are very small - they live in a walnut shell, where even Imi, the tin rabbit's cage can fit next to them - but they are capable of great things. For example, Big Brother reinvents the moon, Little Girl rearranges their apartment from time to time, which is no small thing since we already said: the request is inside a nut.

Imi, the tin rabbit also gives them a task, as they have to be pulled up every day. The short, light stories are multi-layered, behind the tale they dissect questions of belonging, perhaps it is not by chance that the publisher also recommends it to old, settled married couples - although I don't fully see it in my mind when old, settled married couples go to buy this book, but of course who knows.

However, it is certain that this book will provide fun and conversational moments for children and their parents. The volume is completed by the author's own graphics.

Dóra Gimesi – Viktória Jeli – István Tasnádi: Time runner – The circular secret

Pagony publishes the first part of a trilogy for Könvhét - with the intention of filling a gap, under the label of contemporary Hungarian youth novels - which, let's face it, we really don't have an abundance of.

The three authors all came to the world of children's books from different directions. Dóra Gimesi is a puppet theater dramatist and writer, István Tasnádi, one of the founders of the Bárka Theater, the author of the Krétakör began writing children's books in 2009, and he and Viktória Jeli previously wrote two volumes together.

The book is interesting, exciting, real reading for teenagers, with pain in the world, adventure, secrets, once you've absorbed it and you can't put it down. We recommend it to those who are just starting to devour books. Based on the really successful first part, we have high hopes for the rest. Finally! Or are we the only ones who enjoy reading a really good young adult novel as adults?

Veronika Marék: Boribon's cat

No matter how trite it sounds, Boribon has risen to the ranks of eternal classics over the years, and we are sure that every mother and father of a child between the ages of 2 and 5 will be happy if they have this one along with existing (and read ten thousand times) volumes you can put it on the shelf, not to mention the children.

The book is the twelfth in the series of Boribon stories, and in this the cat, who has accompanied Boribon's adventures since the first volumes, finally gets a name.

Éva Pikler: Balaton browser

Balaton BORITO
Balaton BORITO

Éva Pikler's colorful, cheerful book can provide good entertainment for the more patient, medium-sized children (it doesn't hurt if the parents aren't prepared for a ten-minute fairy tale either).

On the first page of the book, a storm destroys the camp of a group of students camping at Lake Balaton, and the wind scatters all their belongings around the lake. While searching for the objects, we can take a virtual trip around Lake Balaton - the excitement of the search is obviously enough for the little ones, and for the older ones it can be a good preparation for a well-rounded tale about one of the more famous and dear to our hearts Lake Balaton settlements.

The industrial artist author's graphics are lovely and cheerful, but it is worth preparing for the fact that what we are looking for is only found after a long browsing among the many items on each page.
