Most people still choose cosmetic products based on their fragrance, advertising, and packaging. Although more and more people already read what is on the back of the box, where the manufacturers are obliged to indicate the ingredients, the average, inexperienced person is unable to adjust between the abbreviations and the Latin names. That's why we analyzed the most common ones with Krisztina Peterman, Dermatica's beautician, so that you can know for sure if you want to apply some of them on yourself, or if you'd rather experiment at home.

PEG

PEG is a summary name that includes auxiliaries and additives (emulsifier, thickener, saponifier). Although it is mostly found in synthetic products, it is mostly completely harmless, but if it is produced from petroleum derivatives, it can damage the skin. Fortunately, this only happens in very cheap creams, and not to a large extent. PEGs make the skin permeable, but it is a matter of perspective whether this is good or bad, as it helps the absorption of useful substances in the same way as harmful ones.

Paraffinum liquidum

One of the most attacked substances, which essentially means petroleum derivatives. Indeed, they have many negative qualities, but they can also be interpreted as positive

Disadvantage Advantage
it doesn't absorb because it's not related to the skin sometimes this is the goal (e.g. with sun oils)
forms a waterproof layer on the skin in windy, cold weather this is useful
doesn't allow the skin to breathe this property simultaneously reduces invisible water loss and delays aging

In addition to these, the paraffinum liquidum account is also written, e.g. also that it clogs pores and causes blackheads to form. According to the beautician, this is only true if the person does not wash his face thoroughly in the evening. If you do this, the skin can breathe and regenerate at night, and that is why it is not recommended to use paraffin cream both day and night: it would really be too much for the skin in 24 hours.

Isopropyl myristate/palmitate

One of the most successful cosmetic ingredients of the 60s. Among its good properties is that it helps creams to spread, as well as the penetration of important active ingredients through the stratum corneum of the skin. On the other hand, the downside is that it can cause the formation of blackheads in those prone to it.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate/Natrium Lauryl Sulfate

It is found in many cosmetic products (cleansers, soaps, shampoos, etc.), however, it is one of the most irritating substances, so it is quite harmful. It was marketed as a cleaning, wetting, and soaping agent, but it was observed that the more it cleans, the more irritating it is. According to some opinions, it can also cause permanent damage, such as cataracts and other permanent eye problems if it gets into the eyes.

DEA

Like PEG, DEA is also a summary name that includes emulsifiers and surfactants. These stabilize and clean well, but they can also have an irritating, allergic effect, which can range from mild to severe, and they are also drying. Therefore, those whose skin is already more sensitive should preferably avoid products that contain DEA in the list of ingredients.

Cera Alba

Cera Alba means white beeswax, which is the kneadable secretion of bees' glands. It is not a substance related to the skin, but it has a beneficial effect in cosmetics, as it moisturizes well, but if it is not sufficiently clean, it can be irritating. Because it is expensive, it is often faked with tallow and paraffin.

Mostly used in creams, hair care products, lipsticks and hair removers.

Bisabolol

Bisabolol has a reputation as one of the best anti-inflammatory, wound-healing and skin-nourishing ingredients, so it is a popular ingredient in higher-quality cosmetic products. It is extracted from chamomile and is an important component of its oil.

Linalool/linalool

Although it can cause severe allergies, it has beneficial effects when properly diluted. It is a natural alcohol that can also be found, for example, in lavender oil. It is mainly used for its anti-infective and soothing properties, but it also gives the pleasant scent of several preparations, as its aroma is reminiscent of roses and lilies of the valley.

Allantoin

Unfortunately, it is usually produced artificially, but it can also be found in nature, in the urine of some mammals, as well as in some plants (usually extracted from black nightshade and wheat). Because of its wound-healing, skin-smoothing, and regenerating properties, it is popularly used in higher-quality anti-aging products, as it stimulates cell renewal and is really skin-friendly. Mainly used as a base for creams, lotions, shaving products, foams, gels, and powders.

Propylparaben

Parabens are chemical preservatives, they are the most common causes of allergies and inflammations, and, according to many, they are also carcinogenic. However, there are several of them, and the above is only completely true for one of their groups. In 2010, the part of the EU Commission dealing with consumer protection disclosed the risks of parabens. According to this, longer chain carbon compounds, such as propyl-butylparabens can be carcinogenic and can cause hormonal disturbances, but ethyl-methylparabens are safe in given concentrations
