Although a bit of autumn weather has unfortunately just arrived, if the forecast is to be believed, it will soon be warm enough to hang out on one of the beaches. And if you don't want to sit in the shade after a few hours of sunbathing, and then toss and turn in bed all night, because every pose is uncomfortable because of your stretched, burning skin; use sunscreen with a high sun protection factor

We have already written about which ones you should choose from the ones in the store, but if you prefer homemade ointments, we have now put together a few very good ones. Try sunscreen, sun oil, and after-sun cream too!

Sun milk, 50 g

I came up with this recipe because I remember when I was a kid how delicious cocoa butter smelled in most sunscreens. Today, it's almost impossible to find one that doesn't smell like plastic, and they don't even look a bit like the old stuff. Well, sunscreen tests don't promise too much good, even if you can find some that can be used on the market.

I still prefer home-made creams, they really contain what I put in them and I can put them together according to my skin type. This sun cream has a very nice cocoa butter smell and is quite thick.

  • 15 g cocoa butter
  • 10 g coconut oil
  • 20 g olive oil
  • 1 ml panthenol (provitamin B5)
  • one capsule of vitamin E
  • 3.5 g titanium dioxide powder
  • 3.5 g zinc oxide

How to make it

  • In a deep bowl, heat the coconut oil over steam, then remove from the steam. Put the chopped cocoa butter in the bowl and wait until it melts. (However, it is not good to melt cocoa butter over steam, because it loses most of its good properties if it is treated at high temperatures - the same applies to shea butter, by the way!)
  • When the fat has melted, add the powders and olive oil. If the powders are granular, break them up with a small spoon before mixing them into the fats.
  • Use a stick blender to mix the mixture until it becomes lukewarm.
  • Then add vitamin E and panthenol.
  • Pour the cream into a 50 ml jar.
  • Apply at least half an hour before sunbathing so that the cream can take effect.

Titanium dioxide powder and zinc oxide

Both are physical sunscreen additives for sunscreen products, they absorb and reflect UVB and UVA rays. After the sun lotion is absorbed, only a translucent white veil remains on the skin surface. Harmless material, does not penetrate the skin.

Tip: This sunscreen is factor 30, but if you want a higher/lower factor, add more/less titanium dioxide powder and zinc oxide as follows: one percent is titanium dioxide powder and a mixture of zinc oxide powder gives protection with a factor of approximately two. If you have Creole skin and are used to sunbathing, you can leave out the titanium dioxide powder, in which case it is enough to use only zinc oxide. Click here for even more homemade sunscreen!

Bronzing sun oil, 50 ml

This is one of my favorite sunflower oils: it smells really good, and the walnut, carrot and calendula oils give the skin a nice bronze effect, while the oil soothes and cares for it. It is a little thicker than store-bought sun oils, but it is also better absorbed by the skin, so it does not hurt to use it continuously while sunbathing. Since the oil is water-repellent, it also provides adequate protection in water.

How to make it

Pour the oils into an old sunflower oil bottle, add the zinc oxide and shake the mixture. Always shake the bottle before use so that a sufficient amount of zinc oxide reaches your skin. If your skin is not yet used to the sun, add titanium dioxide powder to the oils based on the quantities mentioned above.

  • 15 ml walnut oil
  • 5 ml argan oil
  • 5 ml calendula oil
  • one capsule of vitamin E
  • 25 ml carrot oil
  • 3.5 g zinc oxide

Tip

  1. Carrot oil is quite difficult to obtain, and even if it were possible, it would be at a horrible price. It's easier to make it like this: grate carrots in olive oil/jojoba oil/almond oil and let it sit for at least a week. Filter the oil using gauze or a filter with small holes, and your homemade beet oil is ready.
  2. You can also apply this oil to the ends of your hair while sunbathing, it cares nicely, especially because of the argan oil.

Not a misconception, but not enough

Some cold-pressed oils have sun protection effects by themselves. Shea butter is said to have a sun protection factor of 5-6, so does cocoa butter, and coconut oil also has a tiny amount of sun protection factor. It does not hurt to know that it is not enough if you only use these oils for sunbathing, you will definitely need zinc oxide and titanium dioxide powder in the preparations. Fortunately, these are not dangerous substances at all, they are not absorbed into the skin, and you can get them quite cheaply at a pharmacy or online, for example here.

After-sun soothing, cooling cream, 50 ml

This is a very good anti-inflammatory and cooling cream. Chamomile oil is a plant extract that I used, extracted in soybean oil. What's even better is that it also contains added bisobol, which is also anti-inflammatory, and panthenol has the same effects. Shea butter hydrates, soothes, regenerates the skin, and is also anti-inflammatory.

  • 20 g shea butter
  • 5 ml argan oil
  • 10 ml chamomile oil
  • 10 g coconut oil
  • 3 ml panthenol (provitamin B5)
  • one capsule of vitamin E
  • a few drops of 100% tea tree oil

How to make it

  • In a deep bowl, heat the coconut oil over steam, then remove from the steam. Put the chopped shea butter in the bowl and wait until it melts. (You can even grate the shea butter into it, so it melts more easily, just - as we wrote above - do not put it over steam.)
  • Use an immersion blender to mix the mixture until it cools down to lukewarm.
  • Then add vitamin E and panthenol.
  • Pour the cream into a 50 ml jar.
