Gluten-free eating is one of the most popular diets, and not only for people who are sensitive to flour, as it also promotes weight loss. Although it is a very widespread method, there are still many misconceptions about it in the public mind.

It's worth knowing the basics

There are many people who switch to gluten-free eating just as a fad. They often start this diet because they know that gluten is bad, so they eliminate it, but they are not really aware of why this is necessary.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat and other cereals (e.g.barley, rye). For those who suffer from celiac disease, even a small amount causes unpleasant symptoms, such as abdominal pain or bloating. This happens because the intestinal villi, which play a role in the absorption of nutrients and their passage into the bloodstream, are attacked by the substance's immune system in those who are sensitive to it. If the nutrient reabsorption process is damaged, it can lead to chronic malnutrition, fatigue, depression, and various skin problems. So people with a gluten sensitivity can only avoid all this by not consuming more gluten. However, not only they can face unpleasant symptoms, but also those who are "merely" sensitive to gluten: they most often experience flu-like symptoms, bloating, exhaustion and stomach upset.

Unfortunately, there is currently no specific test for gluten sensitivity, so it is not really possible to decide what causes the mentioned symptoms, since all of this can even be produced by stress.

Don't confuse a gluten-free meal with a wheat-free meal or a meal that allows refined grains

It's worth noting that gluten isn't just found in wheat, so don't be surprised if you swap out white bread for whole wheat, spelled, or rye to still feel sick after meals. If you are not suffering from celiac disease or gluten intolerance, then of course you will feel better from these, and you can even get rid of a few kilos, as it quickly creates a feeling of satiety, but if you are sensitive to it, then you should definitely leave these too.

Don't think that eating gluten-free means losing weight

It is true that in most cases, a gluten-free diet leads to weight loss, as this causes the person to give up refined carbohydrates - such as with the consumption of pastries, crunchy, unhe althy sweets, and prioritizes gluten-free foods, fruits and vegetables. Although this is more common, it may also cause you to gain weight instead of losing weight.

In addition, it is also worth mentioning that since gluten-free nutrition is becoming more and more widespread, it is no wonder that more and more things are made this way, including cakes, baked goods, pretzels, pasta. However, weight loss is not guaranteed because they may contain more calories than traditional preparations!

Don't neglect the rest of your diet

If you want to lose weight, you should consider both quality and quantity. So you may be eating he althy foods, but if you're eating two people's portions, don't expect to reach your dream figure in a few weeks. The eternal rule applies here as well, that is, if you eat more calories than you burn that day, it will be stored in the form of fat.
