You can realize many good ideas and visions much more skillfully and cheaply than store products, but for this you need high-quality and (not least) budget-friendly materials, which are not at all that easy to obtain. We've gotten to know hobby shops quite well through DIY stuff, so we've collected a few shops in Budapest that you should check out if you feel like getting creative. But be careful, look around first, then consider, and only then spend. It is characteristic of all stores that their products, which are sold at a really good price, are offset by their other products, which are ridiculously expensive.

You can find most of the creative hobby shops around Üllői út, very close to each other, so if you need to buy a lot of things at once, you should start your hunt here right away. Kreatív Ékszer and Hobbi Művészellátó, for example, are right next to each other, and although there is a lot of overlap between their products, it doesn't really matter where you buy what, because their prices are completely different. The former is particularly valid here, first look around, then take our advice. The third creative hobby shop is just a few minutes' walk from here, which is a larger complex with several smaller shops inside, with unique shops and very good prices. You will find the other two shops on Rákóczi tér and Maglódi út, they are not only hobby shops, but also art supplies.

Creative Jewelry Pearl Shop

Address: 1085 Budapest, Üllői út 32.

Opening hours: Monday-Friday: 10:00-18:00; Saturday: 10:00-14:00

Mecca of pearls, ornaments and accessories. In the store, you can choose from more than two hundred types of pearls and crystals, some of which are in packages, but most of them can be purchased individually, but the total amount can still be quite high. When preparing the article, the experience was that it is worth shopping here mainly for damil and closing clips for chains: you can buy 3 meters of damil between 100-200 forints, 10 meters of aluminum wire for 1200 forints, clips (usually packed in pairs) for 10-30-50 forints (otherwise they cost 5 forints per piece). There is also a lot of ready-made jewelry, these are often discounted, so you can buy mineral rings, necklaces and earrings for less than a thousand.

The price of pearls depends on the material: a plain, plastic pearl can be bought for HUF 20-40, depending on the size and shape, but you have to pay much more for special pieces. Mineral pearls cost HUF 298, faceted pearls HUF 350, and metal pearls HUF 110. You can buy acrylic beads for HUF 140, angel pendants for HUF 200, and white fluffy angel wings for HUF 200.

Tip: If you need several, possibly industrial quantities of pearls from the more expensive mineral or faceted pieces at once, do not buy them all at once. First, look around the store to see if it's available in a bundle - it usually comes out to a lower unit price, so it's usually much better value. If you don't have it here, check out the Hobby artist next door, because here they sell stringable/sewable/glued beads in packages, and they are also significantly cheaper.

Is it worth a visit? If you only want to buy a few pieces of something, then yes, but for a large batch, it is worth going to the Hobby artist next to it, not here. Asking HUF 40 for a piece of plain, plastic pearl - if you buy in bulk - is a complete robbery, not to mention the 30 HUF safety pin, which can usually be bought for HUF 5 in Röltex stores.

HobbyArtist and Crystal Shop

Address: 1085 Budapest, Üllői út 34.

Opening hours: Monday-Friday: 10:00-18:00; Saturday: 10:00-13:00

In the Hobby artist next to the bead shop, the customer will find a much wider range of goods: in addition to beads, ornaments and Swarovski crystals, oil, sticker and acrylic paints, photo cardboard, papier-mâché boxes, white canvas bags and many other creative accessories await the visitor.

A pack of Swarovski crystals cost HUF 690 when we were there (it contains about 100 crystals). They also have a huge selection of papier-mâché boxes: depending on the pattern, shape and size, they can be purchased from HUF 230. You can buy a wooden jewelry box for HUF 1,590. You can buy ribbons for postcards based on a coded classification (a high-quality, showy piece costs HUF 120 per meter). We have seen paintable mugs starting at HUF 480, ballago bags for HUF 398, and six-piece stamp sets for HUF 990. There is a wide selection of paints, you can find oil paint around HUF 800-3000, acrylic paint between HUF 590-1100. In the store, you can also buy rarities such as a simple white canvas bag (HUF 420), Christmas toppers (reindeer, snowman, Christmas tree, from HUF 800) and gift funnels (HUF 990), but here you can also find a bear-shaped, paintable tinsel (HUF 50), which you can then put on the Christmas tree as an ornament.

Tip 1: If you need a dozen pearls/crystals instead of five, be sure to shop here! While a piece of white pearl cost forty (!) forints when we were there in Creative Jewelry, a package (approx. 200 pieces) of pearls in Hobbymüvész only cost 300 forints. This is also true for crystal ornaments: a package of silver, green, gold or red sewable crystals was only HUF 250, which is a very friendly price.

Tip 2: Paints are often discounted in the Hobby artist, you can find them on the wide wooden stand opposite the entrance. You can usually get acrylics, tempera and oil paints at half price.

The range of wooden boxes is also quite large, you can find quite a nice piece for 1000 forints
The range of wooden boxes is also quite large, you can find quite a nice piece for 1000 forints

Is it worth checking out? Yes, definitely. Crystal ornaments and pearls in large quantities are especially worth buying here. The prices of the paints are also realistic, and the range of everything is quite large, and the stock is constantly being replenished.

Creative Hobby

Address: 1085 Budapest, Üllői út 18.

Opening hours: Monday-Friday: 10:00-18:00; Saturday: 10:00-13:00

The third creative hobby shop, also located on Üllői út, is twice as big as the previous two, and it is also a real complex with several smaller shops. The store's offer is very similar to that of the HobbyMűvész and Kristálybolte, there is also a separate bead shop in the foreground. When you enter the store, you should first take a look at the range of paints: we saw terracotta paste from HUF 600 and wax paste for HUF 890. There is also magnetic paint and mineral paint, they cost HUF 998. Textile dyes are available in different colors and packages, the 20 ml version is sold for HUF 289 and the larger 50 ml package for HUF 598. Textile paint can also be purchased from HUF 598, about the same price as in the previous store.

The selection of Christmas decorations is quite large, adhesive textile hearts, pine trees and snowflakes are available for HUF 200, bells – depending on the size – cost HUF 40 or 100. There are also quite a few ingredients for an Advent wreath. You can choose from paintable snowflakes and stars, reindeer and snowmen, but you can also find cotton socks for the tree. You can buy papier-mâché boxes for HUF 230, they have similar shapes and sizes as in Hobbymüvész, so it's really worth stopping by for the special patterned wrapping paper. These really look very good, they cost HUF 398 each (you can find a picture in the gallery). The prices of the pearls are largely the same as the prices of the Kreatív Ékszer Gem Shop, so it is not worth making a special detour. However, it is practical that the bead shop is completely separated within the hobby shop.

You can choose from a wide range of Christmas decorations, accessories and accessories in the complex

Tip: If you're not quite done with the Christmas decorations yet, in this store you're guaranteed to find the accessories you can use to create a festive atmosphere. There are plenty of paintable shapes that you can even use to make Christmas tree decorations (you can find snowflakes, stars, reindeer and Santa Claus from them), and you can also get a lot of accessories for Advent wreaths (patterned candles, bells, angel wings).

Is it worth a visit? It depends on whether it falls on the road. Since it is the same company, the range of goods is largely the same as that of Hobby artist, and we recommend the former for pearls, so do not make a special detour to this specialist store because of these. Unless, of course, wrapping paper hurts your teeth, because it's worth it.

Rayher Hobby – Creative Center

Address: 1085 Budapest, József krt. 36.

Opening hours: Monday-Friday: 10:00-18:00; Saturday: 10:00-14:00

You only have to walk a few meters from Rákóczi tér towards Harminckettesek tér, and you will already find the Rayher Hobby - Kreatív Centrum. If you're on the hunt for unique and funky decorations, wrapping paper and glass boxes, you should definitely check it out.

The store is quite big, it is worth spending at least an hour if you want to walk around it thoroughly. The prices are not terrible, you just have to find what is worth it. A box of large-eyed pearls costs 795 forints, but depending on the quality and size of the pearls, we have found them even cheaper, for 300 forints. You can buy metal ornaments (reindeer, snowflakes, rivets) for HUF 500-800, and crystal ornaments for HUF 800.

The selection of tapes is quite large, on average it costs between HUF 120-130 per meter

You can buy ribbons from HUF 200, and wrapping paper with a special texture for HUF 225. It is also worth looking around among the paper boxes: depending on the shape (rectangle, heart, square) and size (small, medium, large, very large), you can buy them for between HUF 310-400. You can also find plastic that can be opened from boxes, for about HUF 180-2200 (from the smallest to the largest). You can also buy corked bottles of various shapes for HUF 350-1,200, which can be ideal for a Christmas surprise when filled with special sand or a message, or perhaps some homemade gastronomic gift. If you want to make an Advent wreath - a little late, but - you can get the green base here for 480 forints, and candles (gold, silver, red or green) for 200 each (or 650 forints when packed in four).

You can even find a carrot nose, which we didn't see at all in the other stores

Tip 1: Do not buy crystal ornaments that we have already used to decorate hats here. In Üllői úti Hobbyművész, that type costs HUF 250 in a larger package, while in Rayher we saw the much smaller version for HUF 795.

Tip 2: Do not buy rivets here. According to our experience, the five-piece package is very expensive, usually over a thousand forints, for that price you can buy up to 100 pieces online in any shape and color you want.

Is it worth visiting? Yes, even if you just want to look around. There are many special things in the shop that we haven't even seen in other hobby shops (a carrot nose for a snowman, a small hat that can be sewn on, etc.) The prices are good, the sellers are helpful, and the shop is very nicely decorated.

Art-Export Hobby and Art Products Retail and Wholesale

Address: 1106 Budapest, Maglódi út 25.

Opening hours: Monday-Friday: 8:00-16:00

The Art-Export hobby and art supplier, located at Maglódi út 25, sells products to hobbyists in addition to wholesalers, on an area of roughly 3,500 square meters. In addition to professional visual artists, the shop is recommended mostly to university and college students and amateur artists, as the products found here include all really important tools. In addition to quality products, you can also choose from materials that are a few categories worse, but still much better than average.

The supplier has a range of 25,000 products, so it is worth spending at least an afternoon (or rather half a day) to go around. As the name suggests, the shop is not only a hobby shop, but also an art supplier, so in addition to beads and sewing machines, you can also buy fiber pens, specialist books, lino paint, dammarlak and similar delicacies. You can get a painting palette from HUF 1,200, a felt holder for HUF 2,990, a professional graphic compressor for HUF 75,000, but you can also find tools for sculpting, such as a table disc for HUF 9,990. They also take care of charcoal at a pretty good price of HUF 620.

Tip: In addition to materials, tools and accessories, the shop also provides additional services such as picture framing, tripod rental, canvas cutting to size, but the ceramics workshop is also available. In addition, the provider also holds training courses for amateur and professional users.

Is it worth a visit? Yes, but you definitely need to spend a lot of time there. For smaller projects, a trip to a field hobby store is more than enough, but if you need special materials, it's worth a visit. Since the store also offers professional tools, don't be surprised by one or two drastic prices.
