Rare birds and brand new interactive exhibitions await hikers in Gemence, a child-friendly nature trail in Cserhát, and exciting castles in Zemplén

The beautiful spring weather lures even the most lazy people away from the four walls, so now we present three destinations where even those who rarely go on nature walks can find attractions. Interesting exhibitions, easy-to-follow educational trails and exciting castles follow.

Getting to know the renewed Gemenc

Gemenc's floodplain forest hides many wonders, from the many black storks nesting here to the imposing red deer. And the best thing is that it can also show new things to those who have already been here, as a lot of new attractions and educational trails have been created in the past period. The latest exhibitions were recently presented in Pörböly, Nagyrezét, Lassi and Malomtelelő.

In the Pörböly Ecotourism Center, you can get to know the tools of forest and wildlife management, the flora and fauna of Europe's largest floodplain forest, and the folk art of Sárköz with the help of touch screens and microscopes. What's more, we can even try our hand at a virtual hunt! Glass-walled beehives have been placed in the beekeeping collection in Nagyrezét, where you can observe the work of the bees, and the exhibition space has been expanded with a candle casting workshop.

At the Lassi fishing exhibition, a diorama presents the underwater life, a floodplain field table allows visitors to learn about the movement of waters, and a fishing net-making workshop awaits guests. On the Molnárka educational trail completed at Malomteleló, even the smallest can get to know the animals, unique plant communities, and mushrooms of the Gemenci floodplain in a playful, experiential way. The eleven stations of the educational trail present the formation of the forest, big game, bird life, forestry and ship mills.

Tourists in the area should not miss the neo-baroque hunting castle in Karapancsa, which was built by Habsburg Archduke Albrecht in the 19th and 20th centuries. at the turn of the century. In 2008, it was fully restored by the Gemenci forestry; in the hunting castle, accommodation was created, as well as an exhibition presenting the forest and game management and ethnography of the region, while the also restored small castle, built in 1896, shows a historic hunting monument. This year, the approximately thirty-hectare castle park of the former Habsburg archduke estate will also be renovated. The area around the hunting castle, the small castle and the former servants' quarters will be renovated, and the reception area of the castle park and the hunting area will be created. They will create a presentation section for fruit tree varieties, restore the overgrown row of wild chestnuts and the former filagoria.

Those who feel like exploring Gemenc can stay stylishly in the hunting castle itself, but those who want a less luxurious but pleasant accommodation can also try the Vasmacska guest house, we have heard good things about it.

Easy walk on the Gyadai nature trail in Cserhát

The Gyadai nature trail presents the natural and cultural historical values and curiosities of the forests and meadows along the Lósi stream at the northern foot of Naszály. The 5 km long nature trail takes 2.5-3 hours at a leisurely, comfortable pace. The educational trail, which can be walked in winter and summer, has 13 stations, where we can get to know the forests and meadows of the area, their natural features, their values to be protected and the forest and grassland management that takes these into account. The smaller signs between the big stations show additional points of interest.

A special workbook has been edited for the children, in which they can solve playful and thought-provoking tasks related to the attractions, while they are accompanied on their way by the animal symbol of the educational trail, Dani the Ant. There are several resting places available to relax after the journey or just to observe quietly during the journey - read on the nature trail's website.

"This is not just a learning trail, but also beautiful showrooms, a forest playground, a forest lake - with an obstacle course in a circle for kindergarteners, and of course the 5 km tour with a suspension bridge and stations. The children are waiting for fun tasks. There are 5 places in Börzsöny with their own you can find accommodation, from school groups to luxury corporate events, of different standards, but there are also turnkey houses. And of course you can also take the small train," enthuses our colleague who lives nearby. He convinced us.

Vártura in Zemplén, feast in Mádo

And for those who are quite lazy, we recommend a car tour, which is worth concluding with a fantastic feast. Boldogkőváralja, Füzéri vár and Regéci vár can be easily visited in one day. Boldogkővárja is found in the western part of the Zemplén Mountains, the castle was built after the Tatar invasion by Árpád-házi IV. At the instigation of King Béla. Bálint Balassi wrote his poem "Valo a Borivokő" in Boldogkői Castle, built on a characteristic cliff. Today, in the palace wing of the castle, the Historical Lead Soldier exhibition can be seen, which, among other things, presents the Battle of Muhi in 1241, and the mineral exhibition can also be found here - according to the relevant Wikipedia entry.

Regéci castle
Regéci castle

The Regéci Castle was built around 1300 and is located in the central part of the Zemplén Mountains. It is not in as good condition as the one in Boldokkő, according to the decree of Emperor Lipót I, the castle was demolished in 1686, and since then only its ruins remain. While we're at it, don't forget the medieval Füzéri Castle, where in the summer the history of the castle is recalled with castle games. It is worth ending the day in the cozy small town of Tokaj-Hegyalja, Mádo, where the delicious dishes of the Gusteau Culinary Experience Workshop and the excellent wines of the Szent Tamás winery will complete the i. (We wrote more about Gusetau and Mád here.) If we don't want to go any further from here, let's rest our heads in the Mádi Kúria or a little further away in Tarcal at the Andrássy Residence.
