After the bathroom, the kitchen is usually the most important part of workplaces and dormitories. There are people everywhere who willfully or unwittingly forget their food left in the fridge, or even make the microwave unsightly. And although only those cases when food poisoning is caused by dirt from a "professional" kitchen are always in the newspapers, but according to statistics, the home, college and workplace environment is actually much more dangerous.

In 2013, the National Food Chain Safety Office launched the "Food only smart! About food safety for everyone!" campaign, where tips for using small refrigerators and microwaves are now given. Do you know, for example, what temperature you should heat frozen vegetables to, or which shelf of the refrigerator it is best to put?

In the new series of the website äteltcsakokosan.hu, the pitfalls of dormitory life are covered, of course only from the point of view of food safety. At the same time, many workplace refrigerators or microwaves compete with dormitory units, so the series contains useful tips for everyone.

Microwave oven

The shared microwave is usually dirty, which unfortunately has only one solution: it must be cleaned. However, it is important to pay attention to what you heat for how long and in what way. Only use microwave-safe dishes, avoid metal and metal-decorated items. It is good if you heat it covered, and you can achieve a more even effect if you stir the food and then let it stand for 1-2 minutes. It is worth cutting the food into smaller pieces, because they heat up faster, and it is important to heat it to at least 75 degrees, because then it will cook properly.

The refrigerator

These basic rules are also true for the refrigerator at home! It is important that the temperature of the refrigerator is set between 0 and 5 degrees, and that the freezer operates at least at -18 degrees. If you pack the refrigerator, set it to higher power so that the temperature is the same everywhere in the refrigerator.

Perishable food must be put in the refrigerator within 2 hours, this time is shortened in summer. Place the food groups separately on the shelves, and it is also important that raw and unwashed food is not placed above or next to ready-made food. We also show how a well-furnished refrigerator should look.

Also, the basic rule is to keep raw meat and fish on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator, so that nothing can accidentally drip onto, say, cheese and cold meats. And, of course, it would also be important not to leave rotten, moldy, disgusting things in the fridge for weeks or months.

The blackout

What if the power goes out? Should everything be thrown out, or will it still be good? This is what the experts say about it:

  • A fully-filled freezer with a closed door maintains the required temperature for almost 48 hours. If the freezer is half full, this time is reduced to 24 hours.
  • Products that have not yet fully thawed can be refrozen (in this case, quality deterioration may occur, but the chance of a food safety problem is minimal).
  • If the frozen food has thawed but is still cold, do not refreeze it! Let's use it as soon as possible!
  • It is worth keeping some ice batteries in the freezer for such cases. Place some in the fridge during power outages!
