Are you familiar with the situation when you browse the Internet and collect ideas for furnishing your own apartment? This is especially true when you are faced with such a difficult task as furnishing a one-room, tiny apartment in such a way that you can achieve the most ideal use of space. However, there are a few basic rules that can be used to simplify the challenge.

Of course, it is important to clarify well in advance that each such task is unique, so the ideas found must also be adapted and thought through in such a way that they fit the given apartment.

Light and lighting

The one-room apartments circulating as the most popular examples on the Internet are typically one-room apartments, but their size can be up to 50-60 square meters, which leaves plenty of room for different, space-consuming solutions. However, unfortunately, this is not typical of domestic conditions: the small studios at home were mostly created by dividing a larger apartment, as a result of which they are not only really cramped, but also very lacking in light.

The latter cannot be helped much with anything other than artificial light sources and the appropriate placement of living spaces. A person usually spends most of his waking hours outside his home. This only happens on weekends, when everyone likes to be at home, reading, inviting guests, eating together or talking. This is almost always done in the living room, which means that it is definitely worth planning the light here. The coffee table and sofa are ideally located near the window, as this is where natural light is most needed. At the same time, the sleeping area or the kitchen cupboards can be placed in the windowless, darker areas, since you spend less time here and it is easier to light them with artificial light sources.

Light can even be smuggled into the more distant parts of the room with mirrors, but the bathroom can also get more light if you cover part of the wall with glass bricks. With these solutions, you can save some money on the electricity bill, and you can also increase the value of the apartment with them.

Think spatially

When we decorate a room, we usually think flat. We place the bed on the floor, the armchairs and cupboards and the shelves on the wall. This is fine, but if the situation requires it, you can also step out of the plane, which does not make use of the middle of the room at all. The most used solution in one-room apartments is the gallery bed, which is ideal not only because it puts the bed in a more intimate environment, but also because the floor area of the bed can be used twice.

“With one-room apartments, if we define the different functions of the space, we are already ahead, as we can save a lot of space this way. It is useful for such apartments if they are not too large and preferably furnished with multi-functional furniture. If we place a piece of furniture, such as a bookshelf, in a space, we can not only use it from two sides, but it can also function as a room divider, thus better separating the different functional areas of the room, adds interior designer and visual designer Zsoltai Tünde.

Territorial division

It is also important to be able to separate the individual functions from each other when designing the apartment. This is usually done with walls, but this is not possible in the case of a one-room apartment. Here, it is also not a really good solution if the sleeping area, the living room and the kitchen get different coverings, as it compresses a fundamentally small space. So you have to resort to other solutions for demarcation.

„A good method in this case is to create differences in levels, highlighting the kitchen or living room, or perhaps the bedroom with a podium system, under which storage can even be placed. In such a case, the highlighted area can be covered with other coverings, which can be attached to it if we work with properly selected colors. For example, we can also paint the wall in a different color for the highlighted part, since raising it does not disturb the eyes and even has a stylish appearance. For these apartments, it is worth thinking in terms of such systems, as the various functions can be easily separated and the use of space is also practical. If we don't want to raise the plane, it's still a good solution to use different room dividers and mobile furniture, says the expert.
