We thought we knew what Chinese lanterns were like - then we went to the Zoo and it literally took our breath away. Thus, it no longer seemed like a propaganda text that this is the largest lantern exhibition in Central Europe. In addition to the fact that the "silk lanterns" are amazingly beautiful, they match the theme of some parts of the Zoo. We went to the Night of the Dragons.

Well, the 11 animal figures of the Chinese horoscope line up a bit unluckily on the road, and they have a similar shape to the merry-go-round animals at the fairs, but they give off such an atmosphere with their lights that we would even forgive them if they were filled with quotes from Nóra Oravecz. In addition, the atmosphere is enhanced by the fact that there is soft, Chinese-sounding music playing on the designated road, so it is really not difficult to imagine yourself on another continent, if only for a few minutes.

On the Night of the Dragons, a composition made up of hundreds, almost thousands of unique lanterns was exhibited: there are also those imitating animals, plants and a few ancient people. Of course, the dragon could not be left out either, which has been the most important supernatural creature in Chinese mythology and folklore for thousands of years, and of course the lotus flower and the panda bear also appear.

The exhibition promoting lantern art is primarily the merit of a Chinese cultural media organization with closer ties to Shanghai. The public has already been able to see this exhibition in the Netherlands and Belgium, which was mostly presented in zoos and botanical gardens there.

A garden like this is a very suitable location for this both from an aesthetic and technical point of view, moreover, most of the lanterns in question display animals and plants using the tools of lantern art. With the exception of the Belgian and Dutch shows, there have not been many similar lantern festivals in other parts of Europe, so in Central Europe, and within Hungary, the general public can now see something like this for the first time thanks to our Zoo and the Budapest Festival and Tourism Center Nonprofit Kft., which is also participating in the event..” - we found out from Zoltán Hanga, the spokesperson of the Capital Zoo and Botanical Garden.

The Chinese lantern is nothing more than silk stretched over a frame, which is painted by hand by the lantern artists. Inside the creations, even though nowadays, LED bulbs light up.

Hanga specifically highlighted that lantern art is less well known in our country, so I would like to present an important part of China's thousands of years of culture to the visitors. In addition, the "Night of the Dragons" fits well with the upcoming 150th anniversary of the zoo, which will be celebrated on August 9.

We will also talk about this, because a lot of programs and novelties are planned for this time, but for now let's enjoy the lanterns shining in a thousand lights.

Now that we have seen what the lanterns made of real silk look like, we are a little envious that what is part of the traditional holidays in China, we can only admire for a little more than a month. Don't miss this exhibition under any circumstances, it's a great experience!
