The history of humanity is also the history of the search for the soul. Just as different religions and different eras of science had different answers regarding this elusive entity

So what is the soul?

What is the soul? Is there a soul at all? These two questions are perhaps the two most frequently asked questions since the birth of mankind. A serious part of humanity has considered this burning issue solved for a long time. They are those who treat the soul within the framework of some religion or philosophy and think about it according to the methodology accepted in the given field. For them, of course, the answer is a definite yes, because there are many religions around the world, but there is not one among them that does not believe in some kind of afterlife, in which some imprint of our personality appears in an ethereal or tangible way after our death.

Unfortunately, we have not yet managed to find a scientifically verifiable answer to any of the questions, even though many people have already tried this. One of the novel concepts is based on the behavior of light propagation influenced by the observer. Because if we monitor this process, we get the result that the light propagates as a particle, but if we don't, then, interestingly, as a wave. How does this come to the mysteries of the soul?

Until now, scientists have treated the universe as material in nature, independent of the spirit. However, this experiment proved that even a passive, observing mind can change the behavior of the particles that form the basis of our world. For a long time, scientists thought this result was only possible at the subatomic level, but a few years ago it was also described for compounds that contained hundreds of atoms, so this strange quantum mechanical behavior will surely extend into human life as well.

Here, according to the researchers, there must be some immaterial actor in the equation. Or at least something that we don't know yet, and which is more than the sum of atoms, which according to atheists also make up the human body.

Backed by facts

Approaching the question from a medical point of view, we encounter the perception of psychology. We are not necessarily talking about the soul here, although the word psyche refers to this in the original Greek. Psychology is actually the science of human thought and behavior. It does not exclusively deal with people's mental well-being and healing - although that is also an important area.

Its aim is to understand all kinds of processes characteristic of people. According to psychology, the human body and soul cannot be separated and one cannot exist without the other. By the way, this is a completely acceptable point of view even for those who profess a religious worldview. And if these two areas operate simultaneously to form a unified whole, the idea arises that an error in the operation of one will probably affect the other to a greater or lesser extent.

Our expert, beauty therapist Adrienne Feller answers

How you see it as a beauty therapist: inner harmony and happiness contribute to external beauty, or it is due to a neat, well-groomed appearance that someone "feels good in his own skin" - mentally balanced

The two things interact with each other, but I believe that external beauty is nothing but a reflection of the harmony created within us. We all bring with us a spiritual habitus, which is accompanied by an outer cloak, i.e. our skin. Our skin not only reflects our uniqueness, but also the spiritual and physical processes within us. If we strive for balance in all areas of our lives, it makes our eyes, face, and skin harmonious and radiant. At the same time, it cannot be denied that an orderly, well-groomed exterior affects the soul and its harmony. There is no denying that there are multiple paths, but the paths are intertwined.

Give three examples typical of our time when a given skin problem has a specific spiritual cause

Rosacea is a problem that affects many people and is difficult to solve. My experience is that there are many repressed emotions behind this, there is a lot of fire, feeling, things to say and few words to express the feelings. Eczema seems to be telling you that the border has been damaged, the border of the soul has been damaged. This is accompanied by excitement in the soul, which brings with it the excitement of the intestines in the form of inflammation, and the inflammation can even appear on the skin in the form of eczema. We need to know that skin problems are often caused by inflammation in the intestines, and the intestines are the graveyard of unprocessed anger and anxiety. Thus, the treatment of the skin must always be connected with the healing of the soul.

Diseases of the soul can also cause physical symptoms

On this path, doctors came to the idea that various mental illnesses can also cause physical problems - a he althy mind in a he althy body - so if they are neglected, our body can even produce very serious symptoms. Fortunately - or unfortunately - many real or self-proclaimed specialists deal with the diagnosis and treatment of our mental problems.

There are a lot of methods available for this, of which orthodox medicine, as well as different drug therapies, make up a surprisingly small part. The majority of people view various chemicals with considerable skepticism when it comes to mental problems, and they much prefer to reach for alternative solutions in such cases. Like, for example, in the case of a headache, when they almost routinely reach into the drawer for the pill.

The reason for this can perhaps be found not so long ago, when medicine was already so advanced that it could diagnose some mental problems, but its treatment was not much more sophisticated than the level of medieval castle prisons. It is enough to refer only to the popularity of electroshock therapy, whose full mechanism of action is still not completely known today, but it almost experienced a renaissance in psychiatry from the 1950s. By the way, the treatment is still used today, extremely cautiously, but even so it remains one of the most divisive areas of modern medicine.

Alternative solutions can be very diverse. By researching the events of our past, analyzing our dreams, examining our family relationships, or in other ways - using teas, scents, or other aids - they reach a conclusion, which everyone then tries to deal with in their own way. Among these treatments, there are effective ones, less effective ones, and some completely ineffective ones, while success cannot be guaranteed with any of them. Which largely depends on the person of the patient and the therapy used.

That is why it is very important to never underestimate the self-regenerating capacity of the human body, because the above shows that in many cases our own body does most of the healing. While it is often not possible to know exactly what kind of stimulation is the most effective way to do this.

Who believes in what?

Starting with the materialistic worldview, our task here is the simplest, because according to this, the soul does not exist. Materialism considers consciousness and thinking to be determined by matter and material processes, and this does not really include a kind of intangible essence, which is immaterial and cannot be proven.

The common point of the major world religions that developed in Europe and the Middle East is that, according to their followers, the soul goes to a kind of "better" world after death. For this, however, it is necessary that these people behave correctly in this world, even in their lifetime, because otherwise they will end up in a far from pleasant place. Of course, there can be significant differences in what we consider to be correct behavior, as well as in the opinion of the "right" place. For example, getting into the Valhalla of the Vikings was quite simple: all you had to do was fall in battle and you were already inside. According to some Eastern religions, however, our soul is reborn in another body after our death and the series of rebirths continues until the individual gets rid of his karma and reaches the state of nirvana in the course of more and more perfect lives.
