The country's first gym, Suhanj, opened two months ago! Fitness, where disabled and able-bodied people can enjoy the joy of sport together. The gym is Suhanj! It was dreamed up by a foundation, with one of the founders, Péter Gusztos and architect Lóci Alvégi, we toured the room and brought our experiences.

"We wanted to create a gym that is modern, beautiful, clean and demanding, and it can only be said in passing that people with disabilities can train here in otherwise barrier-free conditions. The goal was that the very often appearing Pity and pity, which come to people's minds when they hear about people with disabilities, this place should not come to their mind, but let's have the opposite effect." - begins Péter Gusztos, one of the co-founders.

Slide! Foundation

The foundation was started in 2010 with the aim of sharing the joy of movement with injured and disabled people. Their activities were related to outdoor sports, running and triathlon, but in 2011 they also appeared in the fitness world. With the help of the British Embassy, they started holding spinning classes for visually impaired people. This initiative quickly expanded, in addition to visually impaired people, children with intellectual disabilities and multiple disabilities also appeared.

Zsolt Kalányos, who ended up in a wheelchair 12 years ago as a result of an unfortunate accident, was very happy at Suhanj! For fitness, because you can not only do sports at home, you also have other options: "I used to lift weights at home, but I was unmotivated alone, it was boring. Here I am much more motivated. I go here, I meet friends, and I love doing it. Since the gym opened, I have been here on a daily basis I'm. It's different from an average gym, they don't look good here. Here I find that he althy people are helpful. On the street, there are those who are helpful and those who are dismissive. I wouldn't say that here, everyone helps who can."

And based on what model was the room designed? "The most useful sources of information were the foundation's employees and people who are actively involved in sports, movement and vision impairments belonging to the foundation. The showers in the changing rooms are rimless, so they can also be used by wheelchairs. In addition, the chair can be folded down to sit on and there is a toilet for the disabled in the changing room can also be found." - says Lóci Alvégi, who, together with the Noppa Design architect and design team, helped to design the space by involving athletes in wheelchairs.

A Suhanj! In fitness, strength machines are special in that their seat can be folded out with a very simple movement and you can stand next to them with a wheelchair. In addition, it is possible to run on a treadmill, do stair climbing, and exercise bikes are also available. In addition, kranking appeared, which, like spinning, means a group instructor-led workout to rhythm and music. You just have to wind the device with your hands, not your feet, which is why wheelchair users can use it. It is special that there are also instructors and trainers with disabilities, and a walking person can find himself in a situation where an athlete in a wheelchair leads the training he is participating in.

Professionals can also provide assistance to people with mobility impairments and intellectual disabilities. One of them, Ági Varga, already has a gym, but she can only really deal with the disabled here: "In January of this year, I saw that this gym was being built, and I have already de alt with disabled people, but not in the way I would have liked. I have a fitness center in Pomáz, but it is not accessible, so I always had to go home. Dealing with them here is completely different, they smile during training and feel good. There is no discrimination here, they help each other, these things disappear somehow".

The gym usage fee is almost no different from the prices of an average fitness gym, able-bodied people can find mid-range gym prices, while a significant discount system has been built for the disabled, and disabled people who come here for sports are the average they can regularly participate in training for half the price of gyms in Budapest.

And how is the departure? "The start is definitely positive, obviously we still have a lot of work to do. Compared to the fact that we opened in August, which is a complete dead season in gyms, we are making very good progress. Now comes the task of building it up with conscious marketing so that people in the neighborhood start using it," says Péter Gusztos.
