Liza, the charmer of the fox fairy, is a member of the Central Theater troupe and, last but not least, the father of actress Judit Schell's children. He is happy with the task because he can spend quality time with his old colleagues, but he would no longer have time to play with them. He plays a lot of castings, which makes him feel lucky, although it frustrates him a little that viewers will always be more interested in what the tabloids write about him than what he puts on the table artistically. However, it would be very happy if the Jewish folktales they collected were of at least that much interest to the people

Now that you have reconnected with the independent theater with the Golem Theatre, could you compare today's independent existence with what you did at the time with Ádám Horgas and Atlantis under the management of Tamás Jordán at the Merlin Theatre?

It's hard to compare, because then I made a living from it, now I'm not independent, I'm under contract with the Central Theatre. Actually, I was only independent during the very short period when I was sent from the National. The hardest thing about freelancing is that you have to work constantly. If you're in an app, you're still constantly working, but then you're somewhat more tied down, you don't have much choice in what you play.

Atlantis Society

The Atlantis troupe was founded in 1995 by actor, director and dance choreographer Ádám Horgas. Zoltán Schmied's career also started here, the actor was a member until the fall of 2003.

The group playing highly successful performances found a home in Tamás Jordán's Merlin Theater.

I'm also riding on this, because now after many years you are working with the former Atlanteans again, even the GOLEMESE - or that's how the rabbi went to hohmecol! on the piece…

Yes, we haven't worked together for twenty years, so working together is very exciting from that point of view too, it's good to see them again.

What brought this show to life?

Three of my old friends from Atlantis - Anna Bognár, Szofi Berki and Dénes Bernáth - are in this Szamárfül project, they have been making children's performances for a long time. Since at that time we also did a very successful fairy tale performance with János Greifenstein in Atlantis, we thought it would be good to put something similar together. That's why we continued this puppet, funny, slightly for children, slightly for adults line. Once it occurred to me, what if we made something like this out of Jewish folk tales. That's how it started, and we started figuring it out in May, then trying it out in August; by then, we had collected the costumes and props. There was a preview of it at the Jewish Summer Festival, but the real one will actually be here in Jurányi on October 16.

How much does it break the workflow if you start rehearsing the piece, then stop, then continue again?

It was better than that, because we work with a lot of props. Puppets, boxes, a lot of things were needed to reshape the whole thing. Of course, everything we imagined until then was overturned with the acquisition of supplies, but that's normal.

How did you become its director?

When the idea came up, everyone - including the Gólemes and Szamárfül Project - said that it was a good idea, but then I should be involved. But it soon became clear that if I was in it, we wouldn't be able to schedule the play, because I play so much at the Central. That's when András Borgula (director of the Golem Theater - ed.) said that I should direct it then, and I said that it was good. But this is not the classic arrangement, only in that I have a laptop, which I always open like the directors. We actually figure it all out together, from the stories to the scenery.

So the arrangement wasn't prompted by some kind of inner voice?

Not at all. I prefer to play, to be an integral part of the performance, than to work as an outside observer.

Do you have any fears about the arrangement?

There aren't any, because I didn't consciously think that I was the director here! Obviously, I said things that a director is used to, I have ideas, but I will not continue my career as a director, that's for sure. Rather, it's just that we were able to put the performance together in this way, and the joint work works very well.

In contrast to a traditional theater performance, you would actively like to take the play to the public and play it in schools

That would be great! The fact that the Golem Theater performs and adapts Jewish folk tales means that this is by no means only a play for Jews, in fact! I would be happy if you could get to as many places as possible, for example, we are talking about an away game in Prague.

You play in six plays at Centrál, you will have one show this year, but you were last seen in a movie in Liza, the fox fairy. When will you be on screen again?

I filmed the Brazilians last summer, it will be shown in April (Csaba M. Kiss and Gábor Rohonyi's film about an amateur Roma soccer team - ed.). Anyway, I go to a lot of castings, but unfortunately not all of them lead to a role. I am currently filming the RTL Klubos Mi kis falunk series with great steam, which will be broadcast after Válótársak. I think the license is Slovak. It will be more of a comedy with a very good cast.

Does the fact that you go to a lot of castings also mean that the film industry has picked up?

Many films are being made, but the series have also started. I'm also lucky to be able to travel a lot, because that's how I'm in the public's mind, which isn't bad after all…

These series are also more and more demanding these days…

Yes, and I think it's good that there are attempts. It's okay if you don't succeed sometimes. The point is to work with good actors and books.

In order to get the roles, you also need to be known. But your website, for example, has not been updated for quite some time

I got the website from a friend for my birthday a long time ago. Today, he can't even charge it all the time, I should, but I can't either. They also say that a showreel should be made, but I didn't even have time for that. I should also have a Facebook page, but I'm not the type who lives in a shop window.

As an actor couple (the mother of Zoltán Schmied's children is actress Judit Schell - ed.), how can you rest in the summer?

You can't do everything, I also canceled the summer theater this year, because Judit was working so much that we almost never met. Of course, it may happen that we both work, for example if we get the lead role in a movie, but we pay close attention to having free time.

How frustrating is it anyway that the press is more interested in your private life than your professional life?

The sad fact is always that the viewers are more interested in this part. We are not much in the boulevard, but we did not hide either. We talk about it within certain limits, because it has to be accepted that it is so. But let's not exaggerate, I don't even post the family on my personal page. There are those who choose this, and there is no problem with that, but I prefer not to.
