Almost every store now offers advent calendars. I am not thinking of the calendar containing the twenty-four pieces of candy made from the coating mass at the bottom, or the super-quality real chocolate, but the calendars that hide small toys. Of course, Lego, Playmobil and Schleich also have them, and you can buy them for as little as HUF 10,000. This is not what Advent is about for me, and I don't even think that you should already pile up the children with such expensive gifts before Christmas. Oh, and I have three kids…

Shop calendars have been hung up

I admit it heroically, there was a time when I was drooling looking at the calendars hiding Chilivil games. Then I saw the goods and quickly put the big boxes back on the shelf. I can't buy three anyway. Then there were the chocolate calendars given to them by their relatives, which give them chills because they can legally eat garbage-level sweets every day - respect for the exception. If only the stuff were of high quality, but chocolate with a cocoa content of over 70% is not exactly what most calendars are looking for. However, since the children were so used to opening the windows and the little surprises hidden in the small windows, it is easier to wait and prepare for Christmas, so I decided to make the advent calendar for them.

First you need the calendar itself

We can choose from many ideas for the 24-part frame itself:

  • This is, for example, a fairly simple version made of paper cups.
  • This colorful envelope version is made with the help of a package of colored folding (origami) paper and patterned cellux that can be bought at any paper store.
  • Even a 24-compartment shoe rack that can be hung on the door can get a new function, you can find the instructions here.
  • And if you think you'd like to spend an hour or two for a good cause, then this paper house advent calendar was made for you.
  • Less folding is required for these little bags that can be thrown from any newspaper or paper, which also fit perfectly - and we can even put them away for the following year.
  • If you have it at home - or you can gather up to 24 rolls of toilet paper, it can also be used as a calendar,
  • But the matchbox version also looks great, and it can definitely be used next year,

You don't feel like putting together an Advent calendar at all? We understand that too! If you keep your eyes open, ready-made versions of 24 textile bags strung on a string usually appear in the hypermarkets and supermarkets, usually around HUF 2-2.5 thousand. One-time investment, then it can be used for years.

The little socks are hanging

I'm not a great seamstress, and I can't even crochet small bags. I liked the paper roll or the matchbox version, but I didn't like that I had to cover them with colored paper, so the version with baby socks became the final choice for me. I've always loved their tiny, colorful socks, and how well they came in handy! When they outgrew them, since they weren't used, I made an advent calendar strictly from baby size 16-17, which doesn't need shoes yet. It's true that I had to buy three more pairs to make the twenty-four. I tied the socks on a thicker string, then stretched them in front of the window in the living room so that they were in plain sight. By definition, only a piece of paper was placed in the baby's socks, on which the surprise of the day was written.

Pomegranates, baking gingerbread of course, and socializing

At our place, the eldest always reads the message of the day to the two smaller ones, one-third of which is sweets, snacks or speci alties, the largest part is a shared experience and program, and only two or three have small material gifts, as I fight an unwinnable war for the small with fingers.

If we stick with the latter, there will also be a new gingerbread cookie cutter this year to increase the collection so far, which we will try with the gingerbread baking joint program planned for the weekend, three clown hair elastics, or glitter hair clips. Among the delicacies to eat, they usually get snacks that I can't buy on a daily basis because of spicy products, such as pistachios, almonds, cashews or pecans. Dates and pomegranates are also a big favorite.

As for the experiences, the children's favorites are the ones when they read on the little board that tonight we will tell the story on the twenty-fifth page of the first storybook on the second shelf from the bottom right of the bookshelf in the children's room. This is usually a Christmas-themed story, but they also enjoy the "investigation" before it, when they have to find the specific supplies for the joint program. You don't have to think about big things, watching a movie together, playing board games, playing cards, or going on a trip are also cool joint programs.

Go on an adventure, because anyone can make an Advent calendar. Oh, and one more thought, you don't have to think only about the children, you can make an Advent calendar for your friend, your parents, or even your partner, but that's another story.
